“The Courage Behind a Genius”

The truly brave woman was my mother, who made the so-called foolish Edison appear great before the world.

Once, Thomas Alva Edison came home with a letter given to him by his teacher, addressed to his mother. When she opened and read the letter, her eyes filled with tears. Edison asked what it said. She replied, “Your teacher says that you are a very intelligent boy. We teachers cannot manage or match your intelligence, so I should teach you at home.”

Many years later, Edison went on to develop numerous devices in fields such as electric power generation, sound recording, and motion pictures. One day, while cleaning his room, he found that same letter. He opened and read it. It actually said, “Your son is stupid and foolish. He cannot study, and we cannot manage him anymore. You should teach him at home. Do not send him back to school.”

He broke down in tears, remembering the courage and faith of his mother.
